This is it for today.

Nothing food related, though I made an awesome salad for lunch - salad greens, toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds, dried cranberries, chopped up nectarine with a slightly spicy dressing - as it is super busy today.

Little A has first day of preschool, her and R got their hair cut this morning, R has a settle in day for K, the big kids are in school and there is a meeting tonight I have to go to. Breathe.

So no pictures, no recipes, and this is it!

Slowing down.

Terry is in the manuscript writing phase for Vegan Latina, so recipes to test are getting fewer and further between. Here's a (not fantastic) picture of the latest -
Chocolate Spice Cake with Sweet Potato Jam.

This cake is lovely, it may sound like a strange combination but it works really well.

Its a good thing Isa is cranking into gear to keep me in testing shape.

Thats it over with then.

The first day back at school that is!
Yesterday was officially the first day back, they went for an hour, took attendance and that was it. So much for the first day of school.

M is in Grade 2 this year, and R is starting Kindergarten. She has been saying forever that she's not going to go and doesn't want to go and we can't make her, but when M explained that it was the LAW and Mum and Dad would get in trouble with the POLICE if she didn't go, she resignedly agreed to give it a try. Nothing like a big sister to put fear of the man into a 4 1/2 year old!

Anyway, this week is a school team building week for M, and she'll get her class allocation for Monday. R has a visit with her teacher and school starts for real for her next Monday.

Being the kind hearted girl that she is, M decided she wanted to take cookies in to share with her friends on the first day. Here's a selection of what we made -

Broccoli lovers only please.

I made this soup for dinner last night. Broccoli!
I didn't measure anything specifically or write down the recipe as I went but I want to share what I did as it was superb! So follow along if you can -

I sauteed some garlic, an onion and the finely chopped stalk of a head of broccoli (I only used one head but two would have been better - just use the stalk of all the broccoli you use) until soft.

Added in some rubbed Dried Sage and some "Poultry Seasoning" mix (not much of either), about 1/2 C Red Lentils, 2 finely chopped (peeled) medium sized Potatoes and stirred to combine.

I then added in about 5 - 6 C Veggie Stock, the head of Broccoli cut into florets (again 2 heads would have been better but I only had 1) and a bayleaf, brought to the boil, then simmered, covered, for about 30 minutes until everything was very soft and well cooked.

I removed the bayleaf then blended until velvety smooth. It needed a little salt and pepper at this point but not much.

Brilliant! and will make again and write everything down.

Open Sesame!

Dinner last night was a symphony of sesame. There's Sesame Rice - plain brown rice tossed with some toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions, served with Baked Orange Sesame Tofu (marinade from a bottle but with stuff added to it) andYellow Rose Recipes' Sesame Green Beans on the side.
Told you I'd make something worth looking at.

Welcome to September.

I'm going to start September with some pictures of the girls having fun at the fair, on the last day before H had to go back to work.
School isn't in until next Tuesday, and I don't have Big A and Little a to look after this week so we're having a bunch of play dates and getting caught up on stuff. Maybe I'll even cook something interesting enough to take a picture of and post!
